2 Million Preorders for Dragon Quest IX in Japan

It’s looking like Dragon Quest IX will follow in the footsteps of prior games in the series by selling outrageously well in Japan. 2 million people have already preordered, and more are sure to follow.

Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2 sold over 3 million copies in its first week, which is something most games couldn’t dream of.  And while DQIX is the first game in the series to be released on a handheld, the DS has a userbase surpassing 26 million in Japan.

It is inarguably Japan’s best selling video game series. DQVI was Japan’s best selling game of 1995 (despite being around $100), DQVII held that same title in 2000, and DQVIII was Japan’s fastest selling PS2 game of all time.

If the preorders are any indication, Dragon Quest IX may very end up as the best selling game in the series. It comes out this Saturday (July 11), but we won’t be able to get a true scope of DQIX’s success until next week.
