Another Gamer Screwed by GameStop
May 12, 2009 by srfto

It seems to me that every month there is another story of another gamer getting screwed by GameStop. Surprisingly, the store is still in business and no news of it going under even after so many reports from customers getting screwed by their policies.
This month a 24-year-old named Anthony went to GameStop to trade in his Gamecube to buy Street Fighter IV. He drove to three different GameStop and finally had to pay $13 with the trade-in to purchase a used Street Fighter IV.
Now usually that would be the end of it, but this is GameStop we’re talking about here.
The Street Fighter IV he got from trading his Gamecube and paid $13 for was unplayable when he put it in his Xbox 360 to only see ‘Disc Error’. Worst of all he lost his receipt, which in this case he’s dealing with GameStop so basically he just lost transportation money, Gamecube, and $13 just for a defective game.
I highly doubt they will check the computer for Anthony’s purchase so you can return the game.
Here is his blog on the story:
“Fuck You GameStop“

I always wondered why they wouldn’t let you try them out at the store. Bad customer service never keeps a company in business.

Wow, you’re an utter tool.
I love it when people use a word when they dont know what it means.
dude Dan is not the tool you mark are for saying such a thing there
no dan’s right it is a dumb complaint if it is within the same week they can look it up trust me i work there i here things like this all the time people need to stop complaining and do something
his first mistake was buying an xbox360
your mistake was trying to be a troll but epicly failing. gtfo newfag
Thats the best you losers got? Try again douchebags.
I think its nonsense to give ANY store a hard time for requiring a receipt as proof of purchase. The item in question could be stolen.
his own fault for losing the receipt. Moron
My thoughts exactly.
what so let me guess your so perfect and never have lost a receipt.
please!.
back on line the only reason i hate gamestop is because there a COMPLETE RIP OFF!!
they wanted $120 AU for resi 5 CE on date of release i went into JBHIFI and got it for $78.
1 brand new xbox 360 with 2 games of choice and 1 HDMI cable @ HBHIFI $450 AU.
1 brand new xbox 360 with 1 game gears of war and HDMI cable $500 AU.
catch my drift?
and to top that off i traded in fear 2 only 6 days afrer release and guess how much they gave me, $40 from $120 in only 6 days.
so the game depreciated $80 in 6 days youve gota be kidding me.
im done with them from now on im shoping at JBHIFI gamestop are just a complete rip off, there the M$ equivalent of game sales, they should both go into bizzo and have a motto.
microstop helping you make us ritch!
Hey there retard, the prices of new games aren’t set by Gamestop, they’re set by the people who published the game. And if you’re going to complain about trading something in for less than it’s worth then try using gamefly and renting games. It’s people like you than annoy the crap out of not only Gamestop employees, but all employees in general.
im the retard when your the one who cant tell i was refering to aussie stores.
last time i checked they dont have a GAME OR JBHIFI outside of australia.
if im a retard what does that make you?
its people like you who realy piss me off and get a stern yelling at before i cancel all my preorders with that company and go elsewhere and trust me thats happend plenty of times.
n again last time i checked gamerfly isent available in australia dumbass

haa, some of the people here are retards, it doenst work ..in your console, cos uve moved ur console round ur m8s houses, left in a bag, dropped them, kicked them, then wiped them down put them back underyour tv, and expect them to play all games, prefectli, did u do electronics at school…>?? oh no, thats only england, we get woodwork/metalwork.graphics/electronics as part of the national education 11-16 year old do it, and food tech, so we know how to eat …hmm.that one sounded like a stab at usa, it wasnt….
anyhows,,, u dik heds, the devs pay thousends of game testers to sit at home , testing these things, on diferent console models..re-released models…etc…
then before going to gold press, its cheked, guess what, about another ten billion times,
so to finish, m8, its actually YOUR fault, for not lookin after YOUR shit , and not the game brand new in seal from a shop. dik!!
io have never, in 16 years of owning consoles (i am 24)
have i ever brought a game that doesnt work,
(i dont buy pre-owned) (its just wrong)
(it was okay with cartridges tho,….;;.lol)
idiot, stop taking a hack at the poor lad, and agree gamestop /are ruthless basturd**taking everypenny they can get.
i just herd something stupid liek 80 precent of their profit it from pre-owned, umm….is someone getting mugged. yes. is it gamestop ..no.
Too bad you weren’t taught proper English in… Wait, where did you were say you were from?
ok so how do you explain i bought a BRAND NEW copy of gears of war 2 sealed and all, got home took the disk out of the case.
and HOLY SHIT looked like a tiger had got to it, there was so many scratches on it no wonder the 360 wouldent play it.
so took it back and got a new one just because somethings checked 1000 times does not mean its perfect.
ive had plenty of suposebly “new” games that have had scratches galore 50 bucks say there the copys the manager and staff have been using before release, than reseal it for whosale even though its illegal.
my local GAME got a massive fine for doing that.
It’s funny how GameStop is blamed for a faulty disc and not the company that made it. This happened to me at Best Buy, but i didn’t blame them for it. I took it back with the RECEIPT like a normal person and exchanged it. Keep your receipt next time dumbass or suck it up and don’t blame companies for your mistakes.
Yeah and also Gamestop gets hundreds of trade ins every day, there’s no way to check EVERY single disk that gets traded in, they can only look at the back and see what the condition is in, but that doesn’t mean the game is going to work. Besides 360 games and consoles are so delicate anyway, you never know WHAT games will work. That’s why you have to keep those receipts. If you don’t have it, the best they can do is TRY to look it up in the system, but that’s not always an easy task. You have to know the time you bought the game, what register you were on, and the name of the person who sold it to you and then it’s still difficult to find the receipt.
The Gamestop I goto is great. The manager is nice and always takes care of all of his customers. When SF4 hit a day early (on the ship date, so not EARLy as in they shouldnt sell it), he called me and let me know it was in.
They have never given me a hard time on receipts (even though I keep them ALL in my car for that reason). And as for games losing value on the resell to the store: YES! They lose value IMMEDIATELY. So does a car, thousands, as soon as you drive it off the lot. Sell your NEWLY used game to someone else if you don’t like what gamestop is offering you for it.
Of course, I know not all stores are equal. Up the road the manager of another gamestop is/was a tool. He was rude to me, and made claims like my japanese Dual shock wouldnt work with my US PS3 (long after magazines wrote that they were using them). He told me EA told him they weren’t going to release Rock Band for the the Wii (about 2 months before they announced it officially, even though it was clearly being talked about). Not liking his attitude, I won’t shop at any Gamestop besides the one I like. Period.
I like shoping there because the people are nice, respectful, and would damn sure check in their system for an electronic record of my buying a game and replace it if it didn’t work.
Lastly, don’t be mad about getting beat on your Gamecube. No one wants one. It was probably worth less than they gave you for it.
Yes, just because it’s GameStop, the kid is no longer at fault for losing the proof of his transaction… While it all varies by location and the quality of the employees there, he might have still been able to be helped. At my store, if we can find your transaction in the logs, we’ll help you out, even though we don’t have to. It really helps if you can remember the date and register, though… We need as much information as we can get, because just blindly searching means looking through hundreds of transactions per day in the journal, wasting time that could be better spent on customers who are better prepared and actually buying something.
However, if you act like a total douchenozzle about it, making veiled insults at us the whole time, we’re not going to find your information. Sure, dealing with jerkwads is part of the retail employment experience, but you get what you give. When you’re rude to us, we’ll be as covertly unhelpful as we can be. If you’re cool, we’ll try as best as we can to help you.
Now, this won’t be true at all GS locations… Sadly, some stores are just full of shit employees, and I apologize for that. One suggestion I often make to anyone buying a used game is to put the receipt in one of the game cases so that you’re less likely to lose it.
P.S. I know it’s annoying, putting up with us pressuring you to preorder games and subscribe to the magazine, but corporate is constantly breathing down the stores’ necks about those numbers, and both the total number of weekly store hours and individual employees’ hours are heavily influenced by those numbers. I’ve actually seen two coworkers fired because their numbers we too low for too long, corporate actually told our manager to fire them. So the next time we’re getting on your nerves, forgive us… We’re just doing(and trying to keep) our job. For all of the frustrations involved, I love working at my store.
I wonder if it is true that you don’t need a receipt with Gamestop? They’ve always asked me for one when returning games. In any case, I can’t sympathize too much with the bloke in this article because he lost his receipt, which basically ends Gamestop’s and any businesses responsibility to the customer.
To be fare, I’ve lost my share of receipts. But I manned up and admitted my error. And for one final caveat, you would think that stores would start storing this information considering storage technology capabilities. So whether or not places like Gamestop do or do not require a receipt, this day and age only ID should be required.
-Thus extending the liability of such companies. I wouldn’t doubt that technology such as this is held back for the sole purpose of companies being less liable for the products they provide. Such is capitalism.
I’ll end on a lighter note. I just picked up a DSi from Gamestop. Was not entirely impressed with the new camera or slightly larger screen, but that’s beside the point. Within a week of buying the DSi and playing unreasonable amounts of Chinatown Wars (looming college finals), a pixel in the middle of the touch screen began to die, as in, it would come on and off while playing.
I brought the DSi back a month later -with the receipt- which I’d stored safely in the DSi box, and after some expressed doubt from one employee that I could not replace the DSi for one dead pixel, my DSi was indeed replaced with a brand new one.
The point of this is…
Gamestop is not the devil. It is a corporation.
Oh yeah, and my Dynasty Warriors 6 disk may be faulty or my PS3 disk reader may still be fuct (already sent it in once), but I did not go whining to Gamestop about my misfortune. Koei said they’d refund my disk, but I lost the receipt from a year ago (so there), and my 1 year warranty on the PS3 is up, so that puts me in a bind. However, if I get the time this summer I’ll get to the bottom of which one is malfunctioning and Sony may have an angry customer on hand.
Certainly dropped an unexpected deuce-of-random on this blog. My apologies
All the transactions are stored, but having a system where you’d be able to look up a person’s transactions (while a cool idea) would be difficult because many people don’t feel comfortable giving their ID to a business. Not to mention the number of kids who come in and buy games who don’t have ID’s. I don’t know if it’s necessarily a matter of businesses don’t want to be liable but then again, why can’t the customers themselves be held responsible for holding onto a single piece of paper?
Thanks, that answered my question FLM.
Looks like we disagree with this article so far. boycott anyone? Alex C?
I used to work their and for one its not gamestop except mostly just the trade system them got which here is a word of advice if theirs no promotions going on dont even think about tradeing in games their. They dont make you trade in your stuff so why bitch thats your own choice. Another about this dude that lost his recepit as far as i know if you bring it back within 7 days if its used and even if you dont got the recepit. They can still go throught the system and get it up. It helps if u can remember the day you traded and bought and what you traded. But of course as far as i know from where i stood in my position at that store stuff only stays in the system for at least the manger to look up at anytime for awhile. So if you wait i guess their could possibley be a chance they couldnt bring it up. This shit happens with any company its not just gamestop its bullshit seeing this crap on the internet and makes you really immature get the fuck over and why bitch it about it ya u have ur say to it but we dont wanna hear it. Where i worked we were always really nice to people and did what we could do gave are thoughts of games take them if not its your money you get what you want. You got a problem with the trade in system we have no control over that call coprate and talk to them their in charge. Its not the company you really hate its just that your to damn stupied to look over the fence to see who is really their and its that its the asshole employee`s that you hate. Personally i dont give a shit about gamestop i still like it and all. This is just pathetic about every week seeing something new from someone bitching how they supposely got screwed this guy here deffinaly didnt as long as he went back right away hes fine. All i gotta say is its life get over it and grow the fuck up kids ( Im not refering to everyone just the bitchs that wine all the fucking time)
What kind of idiot loses his receipt from the time he leaves the store to the time he gets home? Did it blow out the fucking window or something?
This story is fucking stupid. Get a life!
I like you your smart hahahah
I work for gamestop, sort of a manager without the title. Tho i do not agree with alot of the stuff like how much we give in for a trade in value. This absolutely does not seem like our fault. Customers like you guys all the time try to trade in games that do not work just to fuck us. So good job on that part. And WE CAN look up when he bought that and usually i just take back stuff anyway when i know he bought it there. You were just quick to jump the gun and say we would not help our customers.
News flash, Retail employees do not fuck customers at all, the corporate does.
We do everything to help you guys cuz thats how we would want to be treated when shopping somewhere. If u have a complaint on how much someone got for there crappy gamecube that even as we sell if for 30$ no one buys at all.
P.s.
Y is this a post about someone else posting? This happens to someone else but ur the one who bitches about it? lol retard
Manager without the title? You probably mean some lowly 3rd key or LGA. Don’t act like you have a position with power. Worked for them for 3 years, went through LGA, SGA, ASM, and even offered a store. Up until manager, you don’t have a manager’s title, and even then, a manager doesn’t have a manager’s power, that would be the district manager. One has to go through a DM to even HIRE someone. You’re nothing close to a manager getting 20 hours a week if you’re LUCKY. Not even the ASM has fulltime hours.
He’s the idiot, not GameStop. Everyone with a brain knows that you should keep your receipt in case of anything. If it’s a system, I keep the receipt inside the box in case anything happens. For a game, I usually put it in a pile of receipts. If this guy just decided to chuck his receipt, he should deal with the consequences and stop blaming GameStop for being like every other store on the planet.
No receipt, no transaction. Period.
Thanks for the non-news.
I really don’t see anything in there that screams “screwed by gamestop”.
He traded in an outdated system and got about $40 for it. No screw there.
He bought a used copy of a game. No screw there.
Somehow he managed to lose his receipt before he realized the game didn’t work. No screw there.
And… “I highly doubt they will check the computer for Anthony’s purchase so you can return the game.”
On what grounds to you have to make that statement? Why do you highly doubt it? Most stores have no problem looking up transactional data for purchases made.
All in all, it just sounds like the guy is whining because he doesn’t want to make the trip back to the store. I can understand being upset about that, but he didn’t get screwed. He bought a used product. That’s the risk you take when you buy used.
wow , big response, and in response to someones anser earlier, mi english isnt the best written, but the points im making are worthwhile.. u nob, u thnk i can be bothered to spell chek everything i post, so idiots liek u can read it that lil’ bit clearer, wel no, work out my msn slang, u lzy bstrd*

k this is what happened to me! I bought a ps3 refurbished… first mistake =( but i also bought killzone 2 with it. to be frank kill zone wasnt my kind of game so i went an returned it the next day to get COD MW2. gave the guy my reciept for the return that has my ps3,and killzone 2 purchase he runs it through i return the game for Cod. A week later i notice that all i have is proof that i had purchased killzone an returned it an bought cod but the ps3 purchase was not on my new receipt and the guy at gamestop must of kept the old one which is understandable we all have those kinda days… sigh* but hopefully they can look up my refurbished ps3 by looking back at my killzone purchase and they will accept my return. to be continued… =/
