Are Woman Gamers More Hardcore Than Men?

February 17, 2009 by Ruibo

screaming-girl-gamerSome of you are may already be aware of this but woman gamers are slowing taking over, only just an increase of female gamers but also the duration of time they spend playing. Girl gamers are more prone to playing MMOs with cute or good looking characters and games that provides a larger social interaction, not just getting head shots. The games females play may a little different from the average male (CS, Halo, Team Fortress, L4D, etc), but none the less, they spend more hours a week gaming than the average guy.

In research presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Chicago, it was revealed that the interest in online games has increased significant in women, and they also spend more time gaming. The study was done in the MMO EverQuest II with 60 TB of behavior data. Why they didn’t choose WoW with a wider range of players is unknown. Here is a snip:

Players who played the game with their romantic partners enjoyed the game more and spent more time playing,” says Scott Caplan, one of the co-authors of the study and a professor of communication at the University of Delaware. He also noted that the study raises more questions for future research into gender stereotypes and cautioned that their results shouldn’t be generalized yet.

Some interesting points from World of War about this is:

  • Girl gamers play more hours a week than gamer guys.
  • Gamers have over all a lower BMI (Body Mass Index) and exercise more than average non-gamers.
  • Girls like to play with their partner.
  • Guys like to play alone.
  • Girl gamers under-reported their hours more than men (ashamed of playing?)
  • Men play to win.
  • Women play to socialize.
  • Guys play alone to avoid sharing loot.
  • Guys are afraid of having a girlfriend who’s better than them at gaming.

Well, a few of these points were not actually part of the study, but never the less part of the ABC News article about it. They also asked Christina Winterburn from theGirlGamer.net for comments, who among other things said:

“We’re still women. … It’s just an emotional thing. I think we probably like to spend more time with our boyfriends than they like to spend time with us,”

I’ve been gaming with my GF since Diablo 2, DAoC, WoW and WAR and boy did we get into lots of arguments over gaming. In the end, once she quitted, I was out as well. Felt rather lonely and didn’t enjoy the game as much. Despite all the arguments and what not, I have to say, its really that much more fun when you have a full time partner to share your crimes with.

as a female I don’t play so socialize, I play to smear my opponents face in the ground, and I’ll do that in an mmo, rts, or fps :)

Heh. My wife plays Eve, in the defense wing of an alliance corp. Of those surveyed in our household, 50% (my wife) were totally hardcore, while the other 50% (me) were whiny carebears.

I am often gaming whilst my husband looks over my shoulder and asks what stage I’ve got to yet. He plays puzzle games instead – but isn’t that the stereotype of the female casual gamer? I’ve been trying to persuade him to join in a MMO but his working hours are longer and he feels he would be forever playing catchup.

I’m hardcore in terms of the hours I put in but I’m not all that interested in perfecting my character build – I get the impression that guys (often, not always) are a bit more into that.

I definitely think women can be pretty hardcore gamers. My fav right now is Resident Evil 4 on the Wii, but I also have a PS2, Xbox, DS, and a 360. I’ve got Diablo Battlechest waiting for the PC to be repaired and still have the old Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo hanging around. I’ve played platforms and puzzles, but my favs are shooters and RPG’s. The more I get to hack & slash or shoot, the better I like it. ;)
