Battle of the Game Titans: Valve Vs. Activision in Lawsuits
April 30, 2009 by srfto

Valve one of the leading video game publishers has filed suit against Activision Blizzard, also another leading game publishers. Valve’s suit alleges that Activision did not hold up to an agreement to abide by an arbitrator’s April 6th award decision involving a 2002 dispute over royalties. The 2002 dispute was over Sierra because Sierra was licensing Valve games without consent from Valve. Sierra at the time was owned by Vevendi and was merged with Activision which the case was also transfer over to Activision.
Valve was awarded $2,391,932, for that case and both parties accepted to end the dispute as long as Activision agrees to the settlement.
However, Gamepolitics reported that Activision now challenged the award, claiming that Valve had been overpaid by $424,136 in years past. Valve however, claims that Activision failed to bring up this issue before the abitrator whom, the suit claims, refused to consider it for procedural reasons.
After all this bickering in court, Activision paid Valve last week for a sum of $1,967,796, although it was missing $424k because Activision claim they over paid. Activision said that there is no way they will pay the rest of the money and if Valve goes to court with it, Activision would counter sue them. Valve on the other hand went straight to court, not at all fearing the other video game giant.
Here is a pdf file of a copy of the complaint.
