Blizzard Resources Diverted to WoW Lead to Starcraft 2 Delay

June 29, 2009 by Ruibo

blizzardI love World of Warcraft, but after this news, WoW and I are no longer on speaking terms. It turns out that part of the reason that Starcraft II has been so painfully long in coming is because a good chunk of the staff working on the game were yanked away to supplement the WoW workforce. It’s not so surprising, given the sheer scope of WoW, that they needed a little extra help closing the deal. Still, it’s a bummer that it draw out the Starcraft II development cycle, since we all knew it would be ages before we saw the game anyway.

It does go to show once again Blizzard’s integrity, though. A lot of people would have just suggested that the company just throw their endless gobs of money at the problem, but Blizzard has always believed it’s a mistake to dilute the talent pool. “Too many cooks,” as the saying goes.

Blizzard VP Rob Pardo mentioned an interesting tidbit to Eurogamer about the design of SCII. Unlike most of Blizzard’s other games, there hasn’t been a point in the development cycle where they drastically overhauled the game and went in a new creative direction. Which makes the delay seem even stranger. I’d take it as a good sign, though – at Blizzard, extra time means extra polish… and they’ve had a whole lot of extra time. I’ve yet been disappointed by Blizzard and still have high expectations even though there will be no LAN for Starcraft.

Ton of news for Starcraft 2 today, new gameplay footage, screenshots of zerg renders, tech tree and a hands-on preview.
