Command & Conquer 4 Says No to DRM, But Yes to Internet Connection

March 18, 2010 by srfto

EA just announced that upcoming Command & Conquer 4 will have no DRM. Great news until they also announced that the game will sort of need you to be connected to the internet to play the game. Well, I’m just confused because isn’t that sort of a DRM itself?

EA community manager Apoc wrote on their forums

“First thing to be clear about, Command & Conquer 4 has NO DRM. Zip, zero, zilch, none.”

“You can install the game from the disc as many times as you want on any machine. Re-install, etc. “

“You do not need the disc in your machine to play. Your EA account just needs to have been activated by your serial key. After that, you can play Command & Conquer 4 on ANY MACHINE that has it installed. All you need to do is login.”

Hooray!

Then he added saying “To play Command & Conquer 4, the computer needs to be connected to the internet.”

Booo!

Hey, the only good news from this is that no word yet whether you will need the internet full time or just at certain parts of the game. This certainly brings back memories to Ubisoft and the Assassin’s Creed 2 issue.

Just because they are trying to spin it as not having DRM, doesn’t mean it isn’t actually DRM.

I signed up for a beta tester and the gameplay is such crap. C&C3 Tibwars and Kane’s wrath have the best gpu. I say expand on that universe, like WOW. They keep changing the game around completely. I want more factions and more cool weapons. Red alert and CnC4 are completely different games all together. It’s like when they slapped that name “Final Fantasy” on a movie that had nothing to do with anything.

What a waste of money. My game and firewall don’t like each other and despite my attempts to get my firewall to get along with C&C4 it finds something else it doesn’t like about the game. I really wish I would have read about the game before I had bought it. Why the hell do I have to connect to the internet to play a single player game anyway? Like something like this will bother hackers or pirates. Sure go ahead and make the game fun for them but difficult for the honest guys. I just hate the idea of having to go through so much only to find out from what I’ve read so far that I’ve wasted my money. Now I’m hoping some one hacks the damn game.
