Commodore 64 App For the iPhone May Not See the Light of Day

A lot of gamers are old enough to remember playing the original Nintendo for the first time, but how many got to experience some of the very computer games on the Commodore 64?

Up until a few days ago, it looked like retro fans might get a chance to relive those memories with an iPhone app that would allow emulation of old C64 games. Not only did the team behind this project provide the ability to play some of these classic games, but they went a step further and created a crazily accurate interface – beige and brown keyboard and all.

Sadly, Apple denied this app on the grounds that no iPhone application “should not itself install or launch other executable code.” Since part of the fun of Commodore 64 games was navigating through that blue screen (does anyone else remember having to type “,8,1″ at the end of commands?) it has the functionality to “load game discs,” thus violating that commandment. Since there are a handful of other apps who have been approved while doing just that, the developers are pushing for Apple to make an exception.

Here’s hoping they do, because a project this completely dedicated deserves to succeed. You can help support them by heading over to the official site a c64iphone.com.
