Since the earliest days of Sony’s PS3 marketing campaign, they have been touting how the PS3 was a far more advanced piece of hardware that could easily outperform the Xbox 360 in graphics department. As of yet, most critics and gamers haven’t been able to point to any single game where the PS3 version blows away its competitor. Strangely, though, it seems like opposite has happened. The new Ghostbusters game, just released this week on multiple platforms, appears to be significantly better in terms of graphics on the 360 when compared to the PS3. It’s got a lot of people scratching their heads.
Lens of Truth broke the story with a very detailed list of the PS3 version’s shortcomings. The most shocking difference is that PS3 version appears to have about 50% of the texture quality of the 360 game. Where as its normal for the two consoles to render things differently, the PS3 version was markedly worse – the textures looks blurry, blocky and undefined. On top of that, the PS3 version is lacking some of cool special effects present on the 360 version. For instance, when the player fires their proton gun at a surface, it leaves a charred appearance over the texture. On the 360 version, this comes with a neat looking glowing ember effect, like a dying fire. This is strangely non-existent on the PS3. On top of all that, the game was shown to be rendered in 720p as claimed, but rather at 960 by 540 pixels with quincunx AA – the Xbox 360 version does, in fact, render in full 720p (1280 by 720 pixels) with 2xMSAA. The PS3 version has some other knocks, too. For instance, in spite of its significant graphical flaws, the game still requires a manual install to the console’s hard drive.
