Details on Sony’s Motion Control Technology Revealed to Developers

E3 had some fun tech demos of the new motion control project from Sony, but details on the technology were pretty minimal. With the new peripheral slated for a Spring 2010 release, Sony has been talking with its development partners and has started to reveal some details on the capabilities and plans for this still unnamed technology.
Sony started by insisting that their motion control device will be suitable for games of all genres and all skill levels, from casual to hardcore. Then they talked a bit more about some of the possibilities:
- Sony’s motion control “wand” – or whatever it ends up looking like – will come with stock force feedback rumble capabilities
- Sony noted that the Playstation Eye already sports face- and head-tracking capabilities, which developers could potentially use to further enhance the user experience
- Along the same lines, Sony said that they are considering the possibilities of using the Dual Shock 3’s innate motion sensing capabilities to interface with the new tech – such as using the wand as a sword, and the controller as a shield
- The technology can currently track as many as four individual motion control wands at the same time
- They are also integrating full voice input and voice recognition through the PS Eye’s included microphone
It wasn’t all good news, as the company also noted that the new technology comes with a hefty amount of processor overhead that developers would need to be mindful of, although they have promised to minimize these issues by launch time.
Speaking of launch time, no firm date or price point was given for the Sony’s motion control device. We should know more in the coming months.
