Double Helix Takes Front Mission Series in a New Direction
June 1, 2009 by srfto

The debut trailer for Front Mission: Evolved, which was just unveiled at E3 doesn’t shed a whole lot of light on what the game has to offer. It shows some of the series’ trademark walking battle-tanks, or Wanzers, being built, an unnamed city being ravaged by a missile, and a few quick action shots near the end. There’s no doubt that the Wanzers look awesome, but then again it’s kind of hard for giant mecha to not look badass.
Double Helix games, the developers behind the recent Silent Hill: Homecoming game, seem to be taking a pretty extreme definition of the term “evolved” for this upcoming title. Front Mission is actually a Square Enix property – albeit one that hasn’t seen the same popularity as its other franchises. That said, like any Square series it does have a ravenous, dedicated fanbase who have no doubt been awaiting a new game, since 2005’s Front Mission 5 only came out in Japan.
Unfortunately, this may not be the Front Mission that fans remember. In this case, the Evolved seems to refer to two major changes in the game franchise. For one, this new entry is not – I repeat, not a turn-based strategy game. That’s right, this new Front Mission is played from a third-person perspective – presumably taking on a more Mechwarrior-like flavor. Secondly, while the storyline still revolves around futuristic mega-nations engaged in endless power struggles, Front Mission: Evolved expands combat to a new realm: space. The game will also offer multiplayer support in addition to its single player campaign. It remains to be seen whether fans will embrace this new direction for the series, or run away screaming.
