Dungeon Crawlers Rejoice: Shiren Comes to the Wii

It’s a bit of a strange combination: on the one hand, we have the Wii, the most accessible and “casual friendly” gaming system to ever exist. On the other hand, we have the ridiculously, painfully, controller-breakingly difficult Shiren the Wanderer game, which will be released on the console next year. The idea behind Shiren and similar games, known as “roguelikes” is simple – infinitely replayable content through randomly generated dungeons, enemies, and items. You might have caught the recent port of Mystery Dungeon for the DS, which belongs to the same series. The games are known for their absurd difficulty – which is considered a bonus to the hardcore but will send most casual gamers packing.

On the plus side, publisher Atlus claims that this game is the most accessible game in the series, so it may make a good entry point for anyone looking to check it out. On the other hand, it may also make you want to throw your Wiimote through your television, so proceed with caution. The game should be hitting shelves next year. Until then, you could always go on a 10-mile hike with milk jugs duct-taped to your legs if you need to fulfill your masochistic tendencies.
