EA CEO Discusses the Future of Motion Control
June 10, 2009 by srfto

With the runaway success of the Wii, it probably didn’t come as a surprise to anyone when Sony and Microsoft both debuted new motion control technology at E3 ‘09. For industry insiders, it was pretty much a forgone conclusion. In a recent interview with Kotaku, the CEO of Electronic Arts, John Riccitiello had quite a bit to say about the motion control movement. He said that EA was very close to launching their own version of Project Natal to support some of the games they’ve been working on. Not that they’re jealous – Riccitiello stated that Microsoft is in a better place to maximize the technology, and of course they’re footing the bill instead of EA. However, they have already built a solid basis working with the technology, and expect to have some good stuff to show early in the life cycle of the motion control revolution.
The CEO theorized that eventually, the market will be split pretty evenly between motion controlled games and traditional controller games. While EA has been a staunch supporter of motion control on the Wii, Riccitiello also acknowledged that the technology is not universal. Some games just work better with a traditional controller, so motion control won’t completely take over the gaming world (much to many hardcore gamers’ relief). If you’re interested in where one of the biggest publishers of video games wants to go with this exciting new technology, you should check out the full interview.
