Employee Suing Konami for Discrimination

Konami doesn’t want its pregnant employees taking maternity leave, which Yoko Sekuguchi found out first hand. After coming back from maternity leave in April, she was deemed a burden to the company, demoted, and her pay was reduced by approximately $2,000.

Sekiguchi isn’t taking it lying down though. She’s filing a suit against Konami Digital Entertainment for ¥33,000,000 (around $340,000). This type of thing is rare in Japan, but she feels it must be done because other female employees in the company have gone through it as well.

It’s surprising since some developers are encouraging their employees to have children by offering bonuses due to Japan’s low birthrate, but it seems that either Konami isn’t doing so or those bonuses are only available for male employees.
