Epic Games Will not Develop Games For Wii

July 24, 2009 by urloc

mark20reinIn an interview at industrygamers, Epic VP Mark Rein stated that Wii market is not worth of their effort. Epic games is the developer of the magnificent Unreal 3.0 engine and after being asked if Epic is going to make some effort to fit their engine to the Wii hardware he clearly stated they won’t waste any resources to design an engine for it.

“If you stretch something too thin, it becomes very thin. How do you support that? We don’t make games for that platform because we don’t see a market for the kinds of games we make – let’s be honest,” he said.

With more than 50 million units sold, Wii is a huge market for all developers and more and more third parties are porting their games to the Wii, after being told that, Rein replied “And they’ve been huge financial flops… It’s just not where the market is. Look at EA. Do you see the same Madden game on Wii? Of course not – it’s a dumbed down game.”

Epic has always been in the vanguard of technology, their games and specially their unreal engine always feature the latest graphics and technology and Wii graphical technology is not its strongest point. But Rein stated they could work for the wii market in a future “But you know if Nintendo comes out with a Wii 2 or a Wii HD, and it’s got a couple more processors and a little more memory and better graphics, then yes we’ll be on it.” So, we won’t see Epic games in a short term but who knows? Can you imagine Bioshock 3 on Wii 2?
