ESA’s Michael Gallagher Has Some Heated Words for Software Pirates
June 9, 2009 by srfto

If you’ve pirated any games lately, then the Electronic Software Association’s president Michael Gallagher has some strong words for you. Normally, Gallagher’s role as the head of the ESA just involves him spouting out a lot of numbers about the state of the industry: how many people are playing video games, how well they’re selling, and so on. At this year’s E3, that was pretty much the jist of the rather lackluster ESA presentation. According to a report from Joystiq, the whole affair was pretty boring, even for a presentation about statistics and demographics. That is, until someone mentioned software piracy during the Q&A session.
After that, it was like someone had flipped a switch on Gallgaher’s back and he went into action mode. He went so far as to label software piracy as “a scourge” on the industry, citing that piracy costs the game’s business over two billion dollars a year. Despite Gallagher’s newfound animation, he wasn’t really telling anyone anything they didn’t already know. He didn’t share any particular ideas on how to fight the problem. It didn’t really add much to presentation, but it certainly was a nice change of pace.
