A few days ago Square Enix showed off a short FFXIII gameplay demo introducing one of the game’s summons, Odin. Later on in the E3 show, they also showed off a longer trailer that showcases both some FMV storyline elements as well as some more combat. Clocking in at around 7 minutes, there’s plenty to talk about in this trailer.

The trailer is mostly storyline oriented, as it’s dominated by FMV sequences that give some hints about the game’s sure-to-be epic tale, mixed in with some Advent Children-style over-the-top fighting scenes. Unfortunately, it’s kind of hard to make heads or tales of the story from the trailer, and the fact that the English subtitles aren’t perfect doesn’t help. Here’s the short version: the Fal’Cie are a race of superhumans who have created a paradise world known as Cocoon, which sits up above a magical wilderness called Pulse. Every so often, people get exposed to the supposedly corrupting influence of Pulse, and so the Cocoon government ships them out to avoid “contamination.” The trains you see in the video are carrying away some people to Pulse. Some humans, such as the group referring to themselves as Team Nora, rebel against this practice, and that seems to be the spark that kicks the story off. Sounds pretty interesting – I’m excited to see how it will all play out in Spring of next year.
