Gamestop Execs Expect Price Drops on PS3, Wii

According to this report from Gamasutra, you may want to hold off if you are thinking of purchasing a PS3 or Wii in the near future. The management for video game retail giant Gamestop is expecting that Sony and Nintendo will be dropping the prices of their consoles in order to stimulate sales. This is all according to Arvind Bhatia, an analyst in the industry who spoke with some key Gamestop execs. Bhatia said that Sony could cut the price on their PS3 by as much as $100, with the Wii getting a more modest $50 discount on the price. Both consoles have been experiencing a bit of a drag in sales recently, and the PS3 especially is in pretty big trouble.
This news may not be too surprising given Activision CEO Bobby Kotick recently stating his company may have to stop supporting Sony’s consoles. However, Sony remained coldly resolute on that issue, and have been insisting that they have no intention of dropping any prices. Bhatia also noted that with a strong fall lineup, software sales could go back in the black. Whether or not Sony or Nintendo needs to cut prices to stimulate that growth remains to be seen.
