Halo 2 Still Alive on Xbox Live with 14 Players Left

Microsoft had finally pull the plug on ‘Halo 2′ on Xbox Live and gamers had to say their goodbyes on April 15th. However, a bunch of gamers found a loophole through this by not turning off their Xbox and disconnecting from their games, which means until they either drop from the game or be forced off the server.
Joe Campbell posted this on the Bungie forums:
Throughout the past week, a small group of dedicated Halo 2 players kept their Xbox’s on so that they could enjoy the game for a while longer. (As long as we don’t turn off our Xbox’s, or lose connection, we can stay online. Our Xbox’s have been on for nearly 12 days straight) Each day the amount of people decreased, at a rapid rate.
A lot of us became really good friends, and it’s almost like we’re family now.
For a while, we had ‘T0 Be Continued’ Live streaming all of our games, until her Xbox regrettably froze while playing custom games. Then, ‘Mr7ankjump’ did a live stream, but he lagged out only 4 hours later.
As of now the numbers of players are at fourteen because most of the gamers in the small group are having problems staying in the game. I say using your Xbox 360 and staying on Xbox Live for 12 days is a feat itself, but hey they doing this not for glory or recognition, but for the love of the game. Joe Campbell will keep updating the list of players still inside the game until it goes down to 0.
I can see Disney making a buck out of this with a movie.
This is amazing. The should allow for people to run there own servers. Making any game live forever.

It still has thousands of players on hundreds of servers, and you don't need to jump through Microsoft's ridiculous hoops before you play the game; a straight jump into multi-player games is simple and fast.

Ok, i don't normally chime in on these things, but. First off Halo does does NOT 'suck', it is the first game to ever commercially and successfully connect gamers online together on a console. Halo had its moments of hackers and little kid #$Q%@ talkers, but all of that aside Halo 2 proved to be dominate.

Really? I would have thought that Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast took that title, given it came out before Halo. Halo was 2001, PSO was 2000.

1.) Consoles and console players suck worse than Halo, sucker!
2.) Get a PC and play some real games, lamer!
3.) More advanced multiplayer shooters came out YEARS before Halo, noob!

you do know that the pc has a lot of the same games consoles do and the halo games are definatly some the funner games i have ever played actualy COD and halo are the only game i do really play so you wanna rammble on about pcs go on be my guest but the microsoft consoles are the only gamming systems i own.
this guy's right, console games suck compared to PC games. anyone who plays console online shooting games would get owned if they tried the same game on a PC. and xbox live does suck, it'd be better if you didn't have to waste your money on it, that shit should be free.
That is so true! We actually took one of my friends who was a hard core halo console player and hooked him up to a PC with an XBox 360 controller plugged in, mapped the buttons, etc, and joined him to a LAN game with a bunch of non-gamer friends on their PCs with mice and keyboards. He got sooo owned. We were literally running circles around him. He was screaming "Where are you guys? Where'd you go? You're moving so fast!"

Last I checked, the purpose of gaming was to be able to escape from some of the mundane and just have fun; whatever platform people choose to play, game on! have FUN! Dude, chill, the point wasn't about gamers, it was about the game. FPS games were never designed for consoles, and don't play nearly as well or easily. I think someone is feeling a little self-conscious. The guy in question kept a running argument going with our group about FPS on consoles vs. PCs. The setup was to answer the question, and it got answered. Even he had fun. No potshot at console gamers as individuals intended.

Why won't they let US host them?
Because to sell games they need to have "multiplayer" and they do that buy making new games and shutting down old games.
I know everything is about money but what they could do is something like steam. BUT for consoles and have a small yearly fee so that they still make the money and keep everyone happy. It is a win win.

Move on people, its like saying "Why doesnt microsoft support Windows 98 anymore, a product I paid money for!". Halo 2 was holding back future xbox live infrastructure updates, since XBL is unified, its not as easy as supporting servers like valve does with cs.
I was pissed when they discontinued support for AVP2 and made a new game and charge $50 for it.

Any game with online services has in the EULA that they don't have to keep the multiplayer servers up forever. You can complain all you want, but it makes sense. The game and LAN play still works, just the server-list server/database is going offline.
It's been this way as long as I can remember. Microsoft is not the first to drop online support for a game, nor will it be the last.
This happens on the PC too, unfortunately. Most games use a master server and sometimes companies make the choice to take them down. Monolith took down their multiplayer servers for games such as AVP2 and No One Lives Forever 2. Of course PC does have the advantage that 3rd parties can make patches for 3rd party master servers.

I got disconnected 8 days ago with my xbox getting the rrod. Oh well was most defiantly worth it I will never forget halo 2.
Depending on what rings showed up it could be fixed. Those rings could just mean that it over heated google it
Just play dumb if you send your xbox in. I had the rrod that was not covered under warranty, but told them I did not know which of the quadrants were lighting up red and sure enough I got everything repaired for free.
man i remember halo 2 one of the best xbox games. great support for the game these ppl are doing. and this is why microsoft sucks balls. sony and nintendo ftw. and all the ppl who hate are just pissed that they aren't the ones getting the credit for doing this
