iPhone 3GS Runs Emulators Beautifully

The the annoying restrictions placed on App Store programs (like the trouble the Commodore 64 emulator’s having), “jailbreaking” is the way to go with many iPhone users. For the uninitiated, “jailbreaking” simply refers to circumventing the App Store and installing iPhone software from unoffocial, third-party installers. Naturally, one of the big tasks for the jailbreakers was console emulation. However, the iPhone’s hardware sometimes just couldn’t handle the more advanced games, to the point where single digit frame rates may the whole thing not worth it.
That will be changing thanks to Apple’s new piece of hardware, the iPhone 3GS. Apparently, the hardware updates in the new version have been significant enough to allow almost flawless emulation on some pretty ambitious games. Already there are some Playstation and GBA emulators ready for launch. Perhaps the biggest testament to the success of emulators on the 3GS is seen in a video of Final Fantasy VII running at entirely playable speeds. That said, it still looks a little stuttery to me (but maybe I’m just not remembering how the original game ran) and I’d be curious to see a more action oriented PSX game on the 3GS – but still, it’s progress!
