Sickening indeed to read an early morning story about Jonquel Brooks, a 21-year-old ex-student who was studying criminal law, being handed down a 107-year imprisonment for killing his friend Brant Daniels and shooting three others in a dispute over a Sony PlayStation2 costing $ 100.

An incident that occurred back in May 2007 at the University Village Apartments in Barstow Avenue clearly, had Brooks pleading for forgiveness, but the sentence handed down Friday 26 June 2009, despite recognizing Brooks’ “genuine remorse”, includes 25 years of life in prison for first-degree murder, another 25 years in prison for using a gun, and yet another 59 years and 4 months in prison for attempted murder (three of Brant Daniels’ friends who accompanied Brant were injured in the shooting).

Once you overcome the bitterness in this whole story, the irony of Law stands out staring at us. Why 25+25+59? Why 59 years and 4 months for attempted murder? Was gaming and the violence in gaming responsible in any way? Was Brooks not trying to defend himself? Does his “genuine remorse” carry no weight? The questions can be endless…

Maybe there has to be a special forum to debate this, and see if Ironies in Law can ever be changed….
