KAOGI files lawsuit against gaming curfew in Korea

KAOGI (Korean Association Of Game Industry) is set to file a lawsuit against the recently passed Cinderella Law. Said law was passed last April and supported by no other than the Korean Government Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. The purpose of Cinderella Law is to curb online game addiction by force shutdown starting from midnight up to 6AM to prevent children below 16 from playing until the wee hours of the night.

Despite meaning well, the Cinderella Law oversteps their constitution’s principles of happiness, freedom and appropriateness. Also, those affected by this law are only Korea-based game developers and excludes non-Korea based companies who are also servicing in the country. Inequal much?

We all know how much Korea has gotten infamy for being ‘addicted to online games’ and this law only serves to magnify that, if not further demonize that. Besides, where the hell are these children’s parents to help curb that addiction anyway?

Here’s the official statement from KAOGI on the matter.

The shutdown lawsuit is to raise the game industry’s voice at the time of denouncing us as a harmful industry. Since the subjects of the lawsuit are members of the association the association will just convey the industry’s voice. Therefore the lawsuit will proceed seperately from the one by civic organization

Charges will be filed likely in August.
