Marvel Universe MMO goes free to play, play as the actual heroes

Last week in San Francisco, Marvel Comics and Gazillion Entertainment revealed some exciting details about their upcoming Marvel MMO video game. While no gameplay or any teasers were revealed, the details itself is already captivating my interest

Marvel Universe will be utilizing the free-to-play business model, while normally a good thing, I’ve always been a bit skeptical about how microtransactions will effect the endgame results. As long as they don’t create over-powered players with major advantages from spending a ton of money, I’m all for it.

The Marvel Universe MMO will also let you play as actual Marvel characters unlike DC Universe Online where you have to create your own heroes. While not many characters were revealed, they did mention you can play as Thor, Iron Man, Nova, Wolverine, Captain America, Spider-Man and Squirrel Girl.

“The Marvel Universe MMO is going to launch with more characters than any Marvel game to date. It’s not just going to be the top ten or twelve characters, it’s going to be a monster list of characters,” said TQ Jefferson, VP of Games Production at Marvel.

I’ve got dibs on Wolverine bub, but if I run into 100 other Wolverines, I’m going to be quite upset.

The biggest reveal is that Brian Michael Bendis is the lead writer on the Marvel Universe known for some of the biggest events in Marvel history. Some of his works includes the Ultimate Spider-Man, New Avengers, Secret Invasion and much more.

The game was initially PC only, but the question of whether it will be available on consoles changed from “TBD” to “TBA”. There’s currently no release date set for Marvel Universe.
