Mass Effect 2 Cans New Game Plus
June 28, 2009 by srfto

New game plus is always a fun feature to have. Who doesn’t like to play a game over again with end-game equipment attributes? Unfortunately Mass Effect 2 won’t be coming with the optional mode, but there is good reason.
The lead designer for Mass Effect, Preston Watamaniuk, shed some light on the subject on the Bioware official forums. The news may upset some, but logic behind it could make up for the omission.
The reason is progression. We have been working very hard to make sure we design the abilities system to offer smooth progression into ME3 from ME2. Allowing double progression on characters makes that almost impossible. We have to have reasonable knowledge about where a character could end up finishing all content on a playthrough. We also want to offer choice of character build within specific classes.
We replaced that feature with playing after you were done because it preserves progression and allows for smoother downloading of PRC.
So it seems Mass Effect 3 will be able to import characters from Mass Effect 2. Doesn’t seem it will work that way between ME1 and 2, however. Also, the ability to play after the game is done will satisfy those completionists who run through new game plus modes to get everything done.
Overall it seems like a good move. It will prevent excessive overleveling for the sake of being overpowered in either game — and playing a brand new game as a sort of god-character isn’t much fun. It will be interested to see how this is implemented once Mass Effect 2 hits shelves next year.
