New Kinect software can translate sign language

Enough of the funny or weird Kinect hacks that we’ve been seeing all year long, a new software in development will allow Kinect to read sign language.

A group of French programmers have managed to build the preliminary software needed to read sign language, the only part left, is to add a big vocabulary list by recording more gestures and words. The current “dictionary” can only recognize two signs, “hello” and “sorry.” Not much for the time being but it is a solid demonstration of the capabilities in their software.

The ability to sign over Kinect or even Xbox Live would open a whole new window of communication for gamers and the general public.
