New Law in Korea Bans Kiddy Gamers After Midnight

South Korea passed a new law this week that would ban children under the age of 15 from playing games between midnight and 6 a.m. aimed to protect children from gaming addiction.

The system is easy to implement in Korea, most online accounts requires Korean gamers to submit their resident registration number which can be used to identify the date of birth. Users will be kicked off their account once the clock hits midnight, the policy also includes a “slowdown” system where if the user is logged in for a lengthy period of time, their internet connection speeds will be reduced dramatically.

These policies will be applied to several popular online games such as “Barameui Nara” “Maple Story,” and “Mabinogi.” The slowdown system is currently being tested on 4 popular games, and 19 more will be added which will account for 79% of the Korean online game market.

The policy is still in its early stages and users can easily find ways around the system by using their parents’ resident registration number to setup an account. The Ministry of Culture is looking to establish countermeasures to prevent kids from doing.
