Obama says Less Video Games & More School

At a town hall meeting in Wisconsin, President Obama got livid about the educational system in the United States. It’s no secret that the US is slumping in education in comparison to other countries, and Obama points the finger at television and video games.
TV and games getting the blame for the country’s sub-par education is nothing new. The President was quoted as saying “‘The Chinese, the Indians, they’re coming at us and they’re coming at us hard, and they’re hungry, and they’re really buckling down… And they watch—their kids watch a lot less TV than our kids do, play a lot fewer video games, they’re in the classroom a lot longer.”
The comparison with India and China is likely not only due to the educational systems, but the economies of the three countries as well. India and China are on the rise, while the United States is going through the toughest economic recession in history.
Pointing the finger is all well and good, but taking action is what is needed to pull the current generation of children up to international educational standards. More time is needed in the classroom, but it’s ironic since a little over a month ago districts across the country were considering cutting the school week down to four days instead of five because they didn’t have enough funding.
In reality, the issue is not video games, but funding for schools and the parents’ role in their kids’ education. Until the government sobers up and realizes that words won’t solve the problem and action will, the United States is going to continue to be one of the least educated wealthy countries in the world.
