Sony have hinted at the prospect of releasing a Playstation branded mobile phone for many years now. Despite this, there has never really been any conclusive proof to suggest that such a handset could ever become available. Not until Hideki Komiyama, the President of Sony Ericsson stated that such a device could well happen in the future during a Financial Times interview that is.

Realistically, in the event of the Japanese-Swedish joint outfit releasing a phone we feel it’d be an instant hit, one that could indeed go to the very pinnacle of mobile sales in a very short period of time. He said “a PlayStation mobile, building on the Walkman and Cybershot phones, could happen,” which hints strongly in favour of action on the media giants part and suggests that the phone could well begin development in the near future.

This isn’t to say it is definitely going to occur though, it could be that this is just wild speculation, it could be that the idea is mothballed for the time being and might never reach the developmental stages. Although, these word certainly give hope to me and the countless others who are eagerly anticipating its arrival.

According to sources, Sony and Sony Ericsson would have to make the PSP phone compatible with the many titles available for the Playstation whilst offering mobile download versions of said games. If the device was built to the highest spec, with an attractive slim form design and touchscreen capabilities we feel it’d be an amazing success.

Hopefully, the pair will consider this option very intently and use it to curb and offset the huge losses they’ve encountered in the last few sales quarters. I for one will be waiting with baited breath for what could take the global mobile market by storm with the pedigree of Sony Ericsson behind it.
