The big question from Pokémon fans is: Will the new Pokémon games go Online? Sorry to disappoint to those gamers, but Pokémon series director Junichi Masuda has said there will be no online title in the series. Mr. Masuda instead want to “emphasise real-world communication”.

This came from a interview from What They Play, where Mr. Masuda dismisses the idea of Pokémon Online.

“At this point, we’re not thinking of going in that direction,” he said. “Trading is a core concept of Pokémon. So when you’re trading, you meet with a friend and decide which one you want and which one they want. I would like to emphasize real-world communication. You don’t see each other online.”

This news probably just ended a lot of Pokemon fans who wanted the game to be online. Either way the next pokemon game, Pokemon Platinum will be a big hit anyway.

Seems like quite a missed opportunity. The best MMO’s are ones that have a rich world with history and plenty for a player to do. The Pokemon series has been doing that for years and would really inject a huge burst of life into the game.

I’m sure there are a lot of disappointed fans…..however, isn’t Pokemon (with the induction of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum) already a MMORPG? perhaps not traditionally so, in regards to those that have coined the phrase. But when you consider the WI-FI capabilities of the games, to seems its pretty close to one already. But that is just my opinion. Besides, I see such a game becoming a playground of adults trying to entice young kids into their beds….so perhaps its an opportunity best left unexplored?
