Pokemon Redesigned in Traditional Japanese Style Artwork

January 25, 2010 by Ruibo

Ever wanted to see Pokemons redesigned with a more fearsome look that can really kick some *ss? A Japanese Pokemon enthusiast did just that; 150 Pokemons illustrated in a traditional Japanese art style that can certainly beat out the anime version anytime. Just take a look at Jigglypuff and you’ll think twice before chucking your pokeball at it.

“Ever wanted to see Pokemons redesigned …”

Nope, but I’m glad I just saw it. Those are pretty cool and I’ve never even played Pokemon.

Never played Pokemon, but if there were a release with this design scheme, I’d certainly be game to give it a go. Great re-imagining and very well executed.

Kanji ARE Chinese characters used in Japanese, usually used for nouns. Hiragana and Katakana are the characters that form a syllabry and are used for punctuation and loan words(Katakana).

      For instance one would write:

??? (kanji)?not ???? (hiragana) unless you’re aiming for some comedic/artistic effect. Both previous examples are the word for the Japanese language by the way. ?

Look at the bottom right hand corner of the first picture. It’s Machop, but what’s that hanging between his legs?

Cubone and Marowak are the scariest, in my opinion. Second panel, right side, in the center.

My kids are nuts about Pokemon, while they freaked a little at the re-imagining of their favorite characters, they were able to recognize and name nearly all of them. I was a little disturbed at how many I knew just from being around them all the time.
