Not everyone can break world records in real life, but the new Guinness World Records on the iPhone does give the closest experience anyone’s going to get. Its simplistic yet entertaining approach to breaking records makes the game worth a look for anyone looking for an iPhone game they can just pick up and put down.

Based off some of the stranger and more popular Guinness World Records, the game is filled to the brim with quick and easy minigames and nifty trivia. And while it could be considered a simple “time-waster” game, the depth of the score sharing system could hold some people into it for longer than expected.

It’s possible to create up to four avatars, each of which completely customizable (with a large amount of customization options as well), and head out on the globe to seek out currently-held world records to overtake. It’s fairly straight-forward: travel to a city, take on the first record and move on. Win money to open up new records to challenge and feel satisfied that your fingers are able to do more than a whole well-trained person could do. In theory.

The minigames are the total focus of Guinness World Records, but you can’t stuff 36 minigames into one whole game and expect them to all be winners. The bubblegum-blowing one and the washing machine-tossing ones, for example, are not the best experiences. However, for each less-than-entertaining minigame, there are two that are actually very fun. The “Video Game Score” game, for example, is top-notch, and the dominoes game is simple fun.

The meat under all the frantic screen rubbing games is the scoring system, which not only ranks your scores against other players worldwide, but also those in your country and then your region. Three sets of scores to compete against is something any score-fiend could get lost in for hours, if only to see their name at the top for a short period of time.

As a whole, Guinness World Records is perfect for casual gamers, children, and score-fiends on the go. It’s incredibly easy to pick up, and while it doesn’t exactly give the deepest gaming experience, it does provide for some decent temporary entertainment, especially for $4.99.
