RTS Lego Battles Out Soon On DS

Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment were given an opportunity to showcase a bunch of upcoming games in New York yesterday. Titles included Mini Ninjas, Scribblenauts and another excellent looking Lego Game!
The game titled Lego Battles is an interesting real time strategy game that players control with their DS stylus. Basically you start off with low level “castle series” Lego men and progress on to Pirate level followed by Space Lego, evolving through the ages so to speak.

I say interesting because any RTS on the DS is an interesting addition, the genre was initially touted as one to watch on the hand held. Apparently, they were going to flourish on the platform – Wrong! An RTS on the DS is a rare breed indeed.
If I’m being honest there’s nothing new or revolutionary about Lego Battles. You select units by circling them with your stylus and moving them to attack the enemy or take up strategic defensive positions. You can build too (no surprise there in a Lego game…) via the use of a pull down menu. I was hoping for manual block building to craft unique structures but it wasn’t to be, they don’t seem to value the “build” factor in Lego enough to warrant its inclusion.
The game is developed by Hellbent Games, whose recent work on the Supreme Commander port to Microsofts Xbox 360 shows. They’re obviously familiar with the RTS genre and manage to tick all the boxes required for what in my opinion is a fun and addictive game.
According to the titles announcement it’ll include an online multi-player, 90 thrill packed levels and a choice of 3 different themes.
I don’t know if this is exciting for you but any mention of a DS real time strategy game is good news to me, I’m really looking forward to this one and hope you are too. Bring on the Lego Battles!
