Rumor: Piracy to blame for PSN downtime

The PlayStation Network has been down for almost a week with more and more speculations as to why and what the hell happened, Sony has never answered the question directly but some intel from a user on Reddit seems to have quite some credential to the answers.

According to the user on Reddit, also a moderator over at PSX-Scene, is suggesting that illegal downloads on a significant scale has caused Sony to shut down its online services. Modded PS3s were able to log into PSN as a reviewer or developer, which has “trusted” credentials, and were able to help themselves information normally unaccessible by the average user.

This has not been confirmed the root cause of the shutdown but Sony has mentioned it suffered “external intrusions,” but the true reason behind the story may never even see the light of day. What do you guys think is the cause behind the whole dilemma?
