Rumors: Blizzard’s New Trademark “Cataclysm”
July 1, 2009 by srfto

According to MMO-Champion.com just a couple of days ago, Blizzard trademarked a new title to be used primarily for the purpose of “entertainment services, namely, providing on-line computer games.”
The name of this new trademark: “Cataclysm.” Now, with Blizzcon rapidly approaching in just under two months, you can bet that Blizzard is gearing up for an announcement of something in the MMO space.
The big question: is Cataclysm going to be the name of the next World of Warcraft expansion, or the name of Blizzard’s as-yet-unannounced MMO project that they’ve been hiring for over the past year or so?
For now, there’s some decent evidence pointing toward the former. In World of Warcraft lore, there the three major continents of Azeroth were united into one Pangea-like supercontinent. One of the the key events that set the entire storyline of the Warcraft in motion was known as the Great Sundering, or the Cataclysm.
It’s what split the continents and created the World of Warcraft as we know it. There have also been rumors in the past that the game’s third expansion would be sea-based, which fits well with the idea of exploring the seas created by the Cataclysm. Whatever the case, we’re almost certain to find out at Blizzcon.
