Rumors: IGN selling Direct2Drive to GameFly [updated

A report from MCV has revealed that IGN is selling their online video game distributing platform, Direct2Drive (D2D), to GameFly with an official announcement expected to land next week.

D2D offers a limited selection of game rentals, which fits into GameFly’s business model. However, the main business of D2D may be more of an interest to GameFly. The company can expand on its profitable business model of game rentals to online distribution.

No details of the acquisition were revealed from MCV’s source but if its true, we should hear word on the announcement soon enough.

[Update]

The rumors are true, the digital gaming service will add over 3,000 PC and Mac titles for purchase on GameFly’s console game subscription service. GameFly’s CEO, Dave Hodess told Shacknews there won’t be any immediate future but the firm does plan to offer new options to customers of both service down the road.

“We have some ideas but need to get the D2D team onboard and benefit from their experience, we will let our customers know as soon as we are ready to roll them out,” said Hodess.
