Sony: DSI is for kids, buy Hannah Montana on PSP

The PSP may give Nintendo a run for their money but its just not quite there yet to claim its throne. Whilst maintaining strong sales in Japan, elsewhere the PSP is a bit hit and miss. Now the DSi has hit stores which will no doubt bring a new surge of sales for Nintendo’s handheld market. The Nintendo DSI was just released and Sony seems to have quite a mouthful in defending their pride on their handheld console.

John Koller, SCEA director of hardware says its a kids toy,

If Nintendo is really committed to reaching a broader, more diverse audience of gamers beyond the “kids” market that they’ve always engaged, there isn’t much new with the DSi to support that. Significant gamer demographic groups are being ignored, and there continues to be limited opportunities for games from external publishers to do well on the DSi. Compare that with the PSP platform, where we have many blockbuster franchises from our publishing partners launching this year, representing a wide variety of genres and targeting diverse demographics. Games such as Rock Band Unplugged from MTV Games, Assassin’s Creed from Ubisoft, Dissidia Final Fantasy from Square Enix, and Hannah Montana from Disney demonstrate the commitment that publishers have to the PSP. From our own first-party studios, we’re launching unique versions of LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm, and we’re also planning a steady stream of downloadable games — both new titles and PSone classics — to add to the content that PSP owners can already purchase wirelessly through PlayStation Store.

- John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America

Pretty ludicrous statement there. Calling DSi games for kids while launching Hannah Montana which is already on the DS. It seems more like Sony is going after the kids more than Nintendo.

As far as I can recall, according to NPD data, there were several DS titles which has always outsold the PSP. To name a few, Lego Batman, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, Pokemon and Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

It looks like Sony needs to do a bit of a PR spin. While Sony’s strong point may still lie in their graphics, its not enough to say their games are better.

I believe Sony was saying they have a broader game selection then Nintendo. While Nintendo has mainly kiddie games Sony has games for everyone.

Sony can SAY that they cover a broader range of consumer but looking at the store shelves or the PSP itself says otherwise.

Sony is designed for a 18-35 year old male. Yes, even the Hannah Montanna one. Creeps. Because while a child, grandma, casual player, college student or redneck can find a game on the DS (and throw it down a flight of stairs without it breaking), the PSP is a fragile system that requires someone knowledgeable enough about handhelds to treat it with kid gloves. And yes, SONY might have a "higher quality" selection of ports and spin-offs of big name games, but Nintendo is the company that extends both hands to all walks of gamer.

The unfortunate side effect here is the deluge of crap.

Lol. The PSP is what 4 years old… Finally getting those "blockbuster" franchises out hey? What a bunch of bs. It took how long to get Resistance or Kill Zone out??? Seems sony was quicker with its "kiddie" games than any other. Crash Bandicoot anyone… anyone at all?? Didn't think so.

BTW I have a PSP not a DS.

You just proved sony's point with your listing of games that outsell the psp. If you look closer you'll notice that they are all what you would call "kiddie" games. Sony's point is that they offer a wide range of games, that does include kid's games too.

Other than a token movie tie-in game, or Crash Bandicoot or some other Sony mascot hack, the PSP doesn't really have much for the non-hardcore gamer. And what parent is going to buy a system for their child that breaks under the slightest bit of duress? (An uninformed one aka 90% of parents but still)

While Ruibo did list mostly "kiddie" games up there, Nintendo offers a wider variety. It's got kids games, nostalgia games, M-rated games (Resident Evil, GTA:Chinatown Wars, etc.) puzzle games, RPG's, racers. Hell, it'll even teach you a foreign language, how to cook, quit smoking and lose weight.

The PSP, on the other hand, takes the same approach as the 360 or the PS3. Sure they'll let developers make family friendly games on their systems, but that isn't who their core demographic is. And to pretend it is, to the point of petulant and blatant lying, is quite frankly beneath them.

  6. the kids at home loves Hanna Montana. I also watched this show from time to time and Miley Cyrus is really fit for this role.
