Sony Looking to PCs for Next PSN Expansion
July 26, 2009 by Polt

Sony made their plans for Playstation Network expansion sort of clear back in June. All they mentioned then were their televisions and cameras, but it looks like VAIO computers may be getting the service as well.
Laptop Magazine spoke with Mike Abary, senior vice president of Sony’s Information Technology Products Division, about the future PSN’s relationship with VAIO — which may extend to other computers.
Would the PlayStation Network on VAIOs include games as well?
That is a possibility but we are concentrated more on movies and TV content. We find casual gaming to be interesting for PCs and we are driving right now to establish our role in that area. We believe this segment of end user of causal gaming is growing we can address that marketplace in a way that is unique on VAIOs.…
So Holiday 2009 we are going to see a touch enabled VAIO with a crossbar media interface that allows you to tap into the Playstation network and access the Sony eBook store?
[Laughs.] You are going to see VAIO products that take advantage of already announced touch capabilities in Windows 7. You are also going to see more collaboration between the groups within Sony.
As Kazuo Hirai mentioned when he announced the expansion of the Playstation Network service, they will be rolling out the features slowly to make the extension the best it can be, no matter the platform.
Some gamers forget that Sony is a company that is not solely trenched in the video game industry. With the Playstation 3’s current losses, the company as a whole needs to come up with new technologies and business strategies to further push themselves into every other market.
Whatever they’re planning looks big. And if it all goes according to plan, it could mean a whole new way to interact with not just your computers, but televisions and cameras as well.
