Sony Price Cut PS3 Dev Kits Again

Sony has reduced the cost of PlayStation 3 development kit by more than half, to attract more developers to the system. This will be a second price cut on the original cost of $10,250 to now $2,000.
“Having the same form factor as the commercially available PS3, the new Reference Tool models allow advanced game programming and more efficient computer graphics rendering,” the company said via press release. “With its more affordable pricing, this new model will appeal to a broader range of developers and publishers, and will help to provide a more streamlined game development environment, further accelerating game development for PS3.”
Sony also said it will enhance their technical support for developers, optimize the PS3 compiler to improve efficiency, and better support on the free-to-use graphics. Although, this was all verbal and not written on paper.
“With more and more new and exciting PS3 titles scheduled for release this year from third-party developers and publishers as well as from SCE Worldwide Studios,” the company commented, “SCEI will deploy various measures to further reinforce game development for PS3 and will continue to expand the platform to offer attractive interactive entertainment experiences only available on PS3.”
Even though PS3 has a good solid games line up, Sony still are losing sales on the PS3. This will only mean one thing if the Dev Kits won’t work and that will be to lower the price on the console. However, no news if Sony will take the route.
