Sony PSP: Problems and Solutions
There is no doubt of one thing, Sony needs to do something to open its market. PS3 is not having the sales they expected and PSP is not selling as much UMD’s as they wanted to.
Let’s just speak about the PSP problem for now.
Problem #1: Piracy. Hacking the PSP is pretty easy in the fat and slim version. PSP 3000 can not be hacked at the moment, but those slim and fat consoles are able to load the same software as PSP 3000 so users having a hacked PSP are not going to update their PSP to a PSP 3000 version.
Problem #2: UMD. UMD’s are messy for a hand-held console. Actually is much more of a hassle than the hacked version where games are stored into a memory stick. Not only space is saved by not carrying UMD’s around, battery is saved because it uses less battery to read from a memory stick than to read from a UMD and on top of all loading time is quicker because it is much faster to read a memory stick rather than a slow UMD.
Problem #3: Software. Or better said, the lack of it. Using UMD makes the distribution difficult and expensive so, no independent Apps are licensed or distributed by Sony’s hand-held.
PSP Go will fix problems #1 and #2 as it won´t use UMD’s and use the PSP 3000 system so it won´t be hacked. #3 problem will be fixed by a softer policy and an App Store, according to develop-online. Tony Colaço, revealed the firm is going to introduce cheaper devkits, shorter Quality Assurance processes and very low price points for new games. Sony also detailed to cut the cost of the PSP SDK by 80%. “We’re introducing new initiatives for the PSP which take it beyond traditional gaming, but still include elements from gaming, and also includes new developers”, Colaço said. Sony stated more than 50 developers are currently working on PSP software for a special section of PlayStation Store. With this, they want to follow the steps of iPhone App Store which has way more games and Apps. Still, they won´t make its software kit free, but will make it cheaper.
