Sony thinks PSN attack was “unlikely” because it’s free

According to Sony’s CEO, Howard Stringer, they never imagined getting hacked because the PSN its free. Silly to think think that offering a free service would give you immunity to hackers.

“Obviously our network security didn’t stop the attack and we’re trying to understand why, and we’ve made big strides in bolstering our security,” he said. “… We have a network that gave people services free.It didn’t seem like the likeliest place for an attack.”

Stringer has also admitted he didn’t expect such a large scale breach initially and that he shouldn’t be held accountable for it, “I really don’t think I could apologize for not knowing. It’s a whole new experience for everybody at this scale.”

Regardless of whether it is free or not, when you’re handling any transaction that involves money, you need to be on on top of security. Even if there were no money transactions involved, with millions of user information and profiles, that’s more than enough of an attractive reason for hackers to get their hands on that data.
