Sony’s Kazuo Hirai Not Worried About Competition

Kaz Hirai isn’t worried about the Playstation 3, and maybe even seems a little smug about the currently struggling platform.
The Sony Computer Entertainment boss has recently made remarks about his competitors (Microsoft and Nintendo), and how they are still running in the “five-year life cycle” mentality of older gaming generations. Looking at the Wii’s specs and the long-term graphical capabilities of the Xbox 360 in comparison to the Playstation 3, it’s not hard to see where he’s coming from.
Hirai told The Guardian ”If you go mainstream too quickly and don’t support the core gaming audience then you lack the pillar to support your platform. Without this pillar you end up with a fickle audience that might be big but will probably move on.”
And in essence, this is true. Real console support does come from the more hardcore demographic than the more casual, as shown in the survival of long-running but generally obscure series like Atlus’s Shin Megami Tensei. The more dedicated gamers stick with the hobby and companies they trust, giving companies like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony long term customers.
Kaz sticks to what every Sony representative has said thusfar: That judging the Playstation 3 now is a mistake, and that two years in is only a portion of the console’s lifespan. After all, Sony is looking at keeping the Playstation 3 on shelves for a total of ten years.
Sony has recently revealed their new motion-sensing technology, much like Microsoft, to combat the Wii’s casual-friendly motion gaming market. Time will tell Sony’s fate, but for now they are really working to stay in the game.
