Square Enix Countdown Clock Keeps On Changin’ Let the Rumors Begin!

Countdown clocks to game announcements keep everyone on their toes, though some are more memorable than others. The most recent (and probably most memorable for years to come) was the Metal Gear Solid countdown around E3, which was a big mystery that left many gamers playing Scooby Doo to figure out what it was. But Square Enix isn’t about to get outshown in the countdown battle.

It started pretty simple. Just another countdown, really.

Then it progressed to a stubby-armed, pot-bellied dragon. That was at least a little more interesting.

Further progression showed a boy riding said fat dragon.

And today, the site has progressed to a second rider, a girl. The boy doesn’t seem to be paying her any mind, though, and is instead looking at someone who is currently invisible. Obviously more is to come, if the ongoing timer wasn’t an indication.
The countdown is adorned with some wonderful old school music that is impossible to turn off, unless you’re not so RPG-inclined.
The art is definitely done by Akihiko Yoshida, the character designer behind Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy XII, and upcoming Final Fantasy XIV. This could be anything, really. A new Mana game? SaGa? Tactics? Final Fantasy V remake (Hey, they ride a dragon in that.)? Speculation set for go!
