Square Enix temporarily shutting down FFXI & FFXIV servers

Square Enix has announced they will be taking down their game servers for Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV and PlayOnline at the request of the power companies in Japan to conserve energy due to the disastrous earthquake. The servers have been taken offline starting on March 13, 6am EST and will be suspended for at least a week. Square Enix has also announced that players will not be billed for any PlayOnline services throughout the April billing cycle, a whole free month.

In addition to the server suspensions, some services will not be accessible on the PlayOnline homepage:

-Friend List Plus
-FINAL FANTASY XI Linkshell Community Beta Version
-PlayOnline Friend List Application
-Community Site Link Registration: Owner Menu

* Additionally, the following types of support will also be temporarily unavailable:
- PlayOnline Password Recovery
- PlayOnline Account Cancellation
- All activities requiring the confirmation of personal information

The official website, FINAL FANTASY XIV Lodestone, forums, and the SQUARE ENIX Support Center will continue to operate and provide updates.

While some players may get a little pissed about the whole downtime, we commemorate and fully support Square Enix in order to preserve power through the disaster. On top of that, they are taking a pretty big loss providing players with a full free month of game time.
