Starcraft 2 Custom Map Preview – StarCraft Ghost Anyone?

August 23, 2009 by Ruibo

starcraft-2-lost-vikingThe second day at BlizzCon, Blizzard demonstrated a bit on how powerful their map editor functionality has become, and boy, did it come at a surprise.

The preview video you’re about to see will show the Starcraft ghost in a FPS environment shooting out at the Zergs. Additionally, at the end you’ll see what they call the “Lost Viking” game, an air ship battling out the Protoss fleets.

Only a few custom maps were shown by Blizzard but imagine what the community can do. The new powerful map editor may even replace Starcraft 2 as a whole. Turning a RTS game into FPS is one hell of a change. I can imagine RPGs just around the corner, perhaps even a twist of Diablo 3 into Starcraft 2.

I just hope I don’t end up spending all my money on the maps. Check out the preview yourself and let us know what you think.

But seriously, I don’t want to see the map previews. I just want the game to come out already. Or at least give us a date to work with. Kinda feels like a doctor telling you that you are going to die, but they don’t know when. I can’t handle that kind of pressure.

Oh, I know. Just still under the assumption the Barrack was elected and it was time for some “change”. I guess not. Haha

i would love a DoTA type game in Starcraft II, the Warcraft III community came out with a lot of very impressive mods using a strategy game engine so i know there will be some great mods for this as well :D

FPS is used in the wrong context of this article. The footage and dialogue clearly depict the demonstration as third person.

glad I wasn’t the only one who caught this

technically, it’d be ‘tps’, though he doesn’t even call it a shooter in the clip

Dota wouldn’t be as impressive in SC then it is in WC3

Not all that impressive, considering that the first two clips were essentially possible using WCIII’s editor in 2002. Revolutionary? Hardly.

He gets all nerd-excited in the video but that’s only to distract you from the fact that Blizzard hasn’t done anything revolutionary in gaming since WoW’s release.

Yeah, but Blizzard hasn’t released anything since WoW either. Plus those WC3 FPSs didn’t work on the Bnet or at least the ones that I tried didn’t. I think that the scope of the SC2 editor will be much more powerful than Warcraft’s and will revolutionize the industry

I have now joined this club as required when what I originally wanted to do was play 3D Mahjongg. I would be happy to participate but I want to know how to play the games now.

Well Starcraft 2 seems to be holding a few new features up it’s sleave. Also the new 2D design may give it a special touch.

Did someone say “World of Starcraft”?

      heh heh heh.

Glad it’s not just me, I am just waiting for the screams when we have to pay-to-play Starcraft 2.

Blizzard/Activision isn’t interested in the purity of the game any more – it’s simply how much money can we take …..

now if they only had a another release date…

I think my mind might have just been blown.

I love the guy in the crowd who yells “Is this StarCraft Ghost?” And then the guy just laughs and avoids the question.

    Someone has a secret.

And the Galaga-Style thing looks sweet.

I have to buy this. Just for the map editor, if anything.

if this winds up being pay to play then this will be a very shitty game
