This is like the arguement on the War on Terror. The ends justify the means. Everyone is snooped on, tracked and traced. Go through the airports and you have to go through naked body scanners that can cause you DNA to actually UN-zip. Everyday I hear more and more controls being called for the internet and censorship and more taxes by taxing the internet. This battle is for individual freedom. Freedom on the internet and in the real world. BIG Governemnts and BIG businesses justify what they do to fight the enemy when all they are really doing is enslaveing us. We pay for it all. The War on drugs, war of terror, cyber war is the next one. All this relates to one another. How can I be expected to buy something and NOT have a ownership in it. Property rights are being scewed EVERYWHERE. You land which you paid for is NOT yours. You pay rent in the form of property taxes. Argue it all you want but dont pay and see who takes it. Same goes for computer games/programs. They have adopted the governments model of making you pay in one way or another and this is the way to get you there. First its free after the original purchase, then they will simply add a fee for up keep every month/year knowing that you cant play the game otherwise cause you have to be online to play it. That may not work well being that you can pirate it but you may not be able to play online/LAN. I know this is a long comment but sucks seeing individaul rights and property rights being shoved aside every day. This is a Property Rights issue. How can I purchase anything to not claim any ownership over it. Like being giving a million dollar check and only stipulation is you cant cash it.

In World Of WarCraft you are renting a server/service ...

In games like Spore, you are renting the game ...

Do you see the difference?

No, ItzaHexGor, attempts such as this shouldn't even be legal, much less encouraged or allowed. Did you even read what I wrote? Maybe, when your CD/DVD/BluRay-ROM dies, your computer get fried, your credit card numbers get stolen, or you can't even boot up the game you just spent money on because of a DRM you'll finally understand what I'm saying. Until then you shouldn't even open your mouth. I don't mean to be rude, but I don't know of any other way to say it and get my point across....

There is only one copy-protection that has been known to work. It is the easiest, and least problematic with PAYING customers.. That's GB size Maybe, EA should make their games 100GB

By almost like lan, I mean Bnet is as close as ou need, isnt it?
You want to play with only your friends?
Join a private channel, or sue a password for your game
Blammo. Its almost like you have your own server. I mean, I guess if you're so anal about your stuff that you can't stand the idea of playing on the same server as the other everyday people it could be lame. You haven't even seen all of the B.net2.0 so before you cry about there not being lan and Why being cut off from the rest of the internet with just your friends is cool, maybe you should make sure that you can't do exactly everything you want to do on the new Bnet before you whine about not having lan. Who cares? Join your own channel, use passwords. Problem solved. No internet? Bummer, maybe you shouldn't be wasting money on a Videogame if you can't afford the internet anyways...I mean you make 6 figures so that doesn't affect you anyways right? =D I'm just being a prick, no hard feelings, I just really don't get why your panties are all twisted about DRM and LAN. You seem on the up and up for hacking and modding, shit you even said
"If enough people want to LAN (that’s really LAN not some script kiddies version of VLAN) then the hack will be out there."
so why get worried? You'll have lan anyways-you're probably right about that. And maybe I'm not understanding the DRM,but what's this about "continuous copy protection"? From what I understand, its like a keycode. You install the game, they verify informaton when you install, and that is it. Possible everytime you log into bnet, but constantly? Here's the way I uderstand it-a direct quote from this article we are discussing....

.."In order to install the game, “you need to connect once to install the game,” StarCraft II lead designer Browder revealed. A player will also either have or sign up for a Battle.net account during the installation process."

So whats this about continuous blah blah? SHit man you live in australia, I wouldn't waste time on a computer if I lived there anyways dude. Shit I live in wisconsin in the summer im never inside, I can't imagine having that all year round. F*** starcraft dude go to the beach and get laid or something =D

Lol I can't believe there is a hooplah about blizzard covering their own asses.

"Ithink for most people it’s true that the more annoying the DRM is, the more tempting it is to get a pirated version instead of the real one."

Althought it's ironic the DRM admittedly seems to be turning more people torward piracy, I think the general attitude on pirating the game just so you don't have to use DRM protection screams they might want to do something more strict than a soft DRM. Everyone seems to think they can just Pirate games at will because they don't want to adhere to what the company is enforcing. To try and CURB this problem. You guys are only going to make it worse. They are a multi-billion dollar company, and people expect multi-billion dollar products from them. They need to make their money back when they do R&D on a game like starcraft for 4,5, 6 years. I still don't understand what you guys are all upset about...It's like a one time password.Just think of it as a step in the installation process. THey aren't taking anything from you, all they are trying to do is keep arrogant gamers from pirating their games freely so they can keep your GAMING needs met as best they can. If an extra 5 minute confirmation that proves you(hopefully) BOUGHT the game instead of PIRATED it keep you from playing, good. I Know if I made a game, and I had the option to let the majority of the copies being used come to life through piracy. or take a measure to stop it so people actually PAY me, i'd choose the latter. Yes, Blizzard is rich, but that doesn't mean you can bitch about your rights as a gamer to essentially bash or strip the rights of the company that makes a game you want to play. If you want to play what they've fine tuned for you for years and years to their ridiculously high self standards to please you, the gamer, for its GAMEPLAY, shut up and respect a company trying to cover their asses from self righteous pirate happy gamers who feel the company who makes the game for you doesn't have the right to distribute and manufacture the game how they see fit. I just don't get you guys. So what would make you happy would be a game as easy to pirate and rip as SC;original, and include LAN. Is that it?
Well here's and Idea- Go play SC;original. I'm not sure what WOULD make you guys happy. No copyright protection? Push the game out two years ago before it was ready and bitch about how blizz rushed it through to make money? Seems like if it isn't Shoes, it's the socks. If It ain't the socks, It's the feet. If it ain't the feet, It's the laces.... I haven't read this blog for some time so maybe you guys have already enlightened us, but feel free to do so again. What do you suggest as the hands down superior alternative that satisfies everyone? Just Curious.

I'll see upon release, if it has no DRM then I think I'm going to get it, otherwise I'll likely skip it and only get Diablo 3 (unless that has stuff like Securom etc. as well). It may sound arrogant, but personally I'dd rather not reward game studios for using things such as DRM. It's like those mandatory 1 minute anti-piracy spam ads you are forced to watch whenever you buy a DVD in store; I think for most people it's true that the more annoying the DRM is, the more tempting it is to get a pirated version instead of the real one.

wow! congratulations on breeding.

It's all about you huh? have read back through the thread and see why some people have issues with continuous copy protection and not only what it means to Starcraft but to games in general.

The petition(s) are sitting about 250,000 (been stable like that for about 4 months or so) - there wont be a change until Blizzard actually moves, Beta? Release Date? who the f*ck knows what their timing is. It's really more indicative of what might happen, i.e. if 1 in 6 complains (is some industries its 1 in 13) - That's a lot of unhappy people, not everyone will sign a thread or discussion thread.

Old, yes I am much older than you - I actually bought and paid for the original game and played it all those years ago. It doesn't make me more of a gamer than everyone else but I doesn't mean my opinion matters any less either.

Funnily enough, being older perhaps makes me less inclined to bend over whilst Blizzard tries to shove their late offering up my backside.

Almost like LAN?

Now you have how much data traveling up and down that pipe?

There are no dedicated Australian servers (it's not worth their money) which means no constant connection.
Which means the game can't be played if Blizzard require continuous copy protection (i.e. continuous connection, thats bandwidth I am paying for).

If enough people want to LAN (that's really LAN not some script kiddies version of VLAN) then the hack will be out there.

So much fail here I was almost not sure where to start.

Firstly, WOW is a paid subscription service - think for a second that they are doing all this (whatever that is) for free or out of the goodness of their hearts.

Secondly, DRM - you don't have a clue as to what they will be doing, neither do I. We wont know til they actually bring out the game (it's rather likely to be a combination of tools).

and lastly, LAN is a LOCAL Area Network, Local means disconnected from the internet. I should be able to hear your screams in Australia when your connection drops or is cut off (for any number of reasons) and you cant play your game because Blizzard thinks you are a thief!

The last thing I need running on my systems is another proprietary piece of software wanting to put holes in my firewall to authenticate whenever it gets the urge - how long before some "crew" decides this is another clever way in to somebodies system.

You finished saying that the internet is an atrocity (unreliable yes?) and yet you support the actions of a company who are happy to spend your money on copy protection relying on the "atrocity" (of the connection)

Oh and some of us live outside of America (yes the rest of the world) and support is nonexistent (unless you are reading warez threads).

"We want a game that our mates can bring a laptop around to our place and spend the night playing – we aren’t interested in playing with whatever trolls we might find on bnet (you for example)."

Log onto b.net.
go into private channel
make pricate game and password
only your friends can play
WOW its almost like all the benefits of a lan, but you can simultaneously have other people join your games or channels, or go public with your party. lol
Nay to streamlined options!!
lol come on are you serious

"You will need to be constantly connnected to Blizzards server to play the game. How else will your rankings and stats be included on the server. (Are you actually reading anything about b.net and how it works)."
No shit. If you want to play multiplayer you have to log onto b.net. SO what? See above.^

Well, I guess I'm lucky enough to have a job, and like a huge majority of modernized people(and an OVERWHELMING majority of regular gamers) have an internet connection. I'll finish up and file this under "don't give a crap"
because
1) I dont care about LAN(in reference to LAN being supported by starcraft(the TOPIC at hand ya freaking dumbass)
2)I DO have the internet, so none of the crap you talk about ranking and whatnot matters.
3) Pretty sure you can register and choose to not be ranked, or just play single player if you dont have the internet. If you have to be connected to the interenet at all time to load the game? that is pretty stupid, admiteddly, and i dont know if you are right on this BOLD claim. but again, I have the internet at my fingertips, what do I Care?
Give me a quality game, let me compete online with people my skill level, and play with my friends and i'll be a happy consumer
O snap, that's exactly what blizzard is trying to do. Almost like they are a successful multi-billion dollar conglomerate...
And quit referencing me getting grounded and everything. You obviously trying to prove your superiority by you being old than everyone just makes you look like a jackass. I'm 22, have a son, bills, a job, and enough money to do what I want. Buy SC and play it, the way they present the product, or stfu and move along. And you said something about me being a troll, I'm just trying to bring everyone into reality. Think getting some "petition" with 100000 sigs is going to bring lan back? Freakin' hilarious =D
