Swedish Developer Grin Praises XBLA and PSN Development

Sweden’s Stockholm based Developer Grin (the producer of Bionic Commando: Rearmed – last year’s stand out downloadable game) have recently stated that getting a video game onto the XBLA or PSN is a daunting and difficult task despite the fact doing so gives you a great deal of exposure. They are incredibly fond of the fact that the world’s biggest video game publishers cannot buy exposure, which gives the smaller firms an equal chance. However, getting a game onto the platform is no easy task.

“It’s really nice that, whoever you are, you can get the same sort of attention [on XBLA],” said Bo Andersson, Grins CEO. “I don’t think the big publishers can muscle their way in for more exposure on the platform; it’s a level playing field. That promotes quality.”

“It’s still much easier to make digital games on the PC than it is with XBLA and PSN,” he says. “With the consoles’ online platforms, Sony and Microsoft have their own rules and regulations to follow, and you have to have a pretty robust [bug testing] session to get your game out there. That’s something which smaller independent developers run into.” Clearly, this is problematic for the smaller companies who struggle to meet the fee.
