Team Ninja to Develop New Metroid Game

Read that title again, and tell me what’s weird about this scenario. First off, we have Team Ninja, who are responsible for the high-action Ninja Gaiden games as well as the Dead or Alive fighting games (as well as the bootylicious DoA Beach Volleyball games). A beloved series like Metroid wouldn’t seem like the next place to go for these guys. If you check out the trailer for the game, you can clearly see Team Ninja’s touch: the game clearly appears more action oriented, with Samus performing all kinds of acrobatic maneuvers and some downright brutal combat moves.
According to the information revealed at E3, Metroid: Other M will be a combination of first-person and third-person action in both 2D and 3D environments. There is some concern by fans and critics whether or not Team Ninja will be able to create the type of Metroid that people are familiar with. Since Ninja Gaiden is known for its violet and bloody fast-paced action and Metroid for its slow-paced exploration, the two seem like quite the odd couple.
The head developers have assured as that the game will retain that “true Metroid feel,” and also noted that this game will delve deeply into Samus’ past and her character. That’s reason to be optimistic, and if nothing else, Team Ninja has really done some impressive work with the Wii’s graphics engine. The game is primed for launch in 2010 – we’ll see then if Team Ninja is able to pull a project like this off.
