Adding Canada to our “Watch List” for gaming piracy seems more than a little ridiculous. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not an advocate of ripping off game developers – I know the people designing the games are working hard for their money. But when are we going to realize our current efforts to stop piracy don’t work?
Having a “Watch List” doesn’t do anything but make us seem like that annoying tattletale who always kept track of who caused problems for the substitute teacher so he or she could tell the real teach the next day. The only problem is we don’t have anyone to share our stupid information with!
We’ve also got to stop trying to force our laws on other countries. Canada is part of the game development community so they are losing money by not strengthening their own piracy laws. But that’s their prerogative. Maybe they have a reason. Maybe they know our methods don’t work. Maybe they just don’t care enough. Whatever their reason is they don’t have to share it with the United States and they don’t have to change any laws on their books.
The reality is no country is going to listen to our ideas on how to stop gaming piracy until we demonstrate that we know what we’re doing. Let’s focus on that and let’s tear up that ridiculous Watch List as a sign that meaningless attempts to seem like we’re doing something about the problem while passing the buck to the other people are a thing of the past.
