Video Game Addicts Aren’t Big on Sleeping. No Really.

If you’re addicted to video games, you know what the addiction does to you. But did you know that on average people who play video games sleep less? The Associated Professional Sleep Societies met for their 23rd annual meeting, and one of their most interesting finds is about gamers and the way they sleep.
Anyone who has really gotten into a video game before knows what it’s like to get into a game and lose track of time. Gamers are notorious for staying up late, but no one expected gamers to sleep less in general.
A spokesperson for the University of Arkansas claims studies have shown that long-term gamers spend less time in bed, with a longer sleep latency and shorter REM latency. The studies were done on 137 college students who played video games for more than seven hours a week, most of which were female (though that apparently has little to do with the study itself).
The topic is definitely worth thinking about, though the chances of anyone putting down the controller for a few weeks to get a few hours of extra sleep is pretty low.
The Stanford University School of Medicine has also determined signs of video game addiction in children and adults. Check out this Examiner article to see their findings on addiction symptoms. Confirming your addiction feels good, man.
