What If: New Super Mario Bros. Wii Went More Retro

There’s retro, and then there’s retro. Nintendo is looking to build on the success of their New Super Mario Bros. game for the DS with a new Wii version that sports better graphics and, more importantly, 4-player co-op play. NSMB on the DS had a definite retro feel that was reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 3 on SNES, and that’s the graphical basis for the new Wii game. However, NeoGAF user Mama Robotnik posed an interesting “What If” scenario. What if New Super Mario Bros. Wii was rendered in the style of previous games in the series?

To help our imaginations along, Mama Robotnik mocked up four different screen shots, each replicating a particular screenshot from the Wii game (which features the players facing off against some Hammer Bros.) in it’s own way. We’ve got one each in the style of Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, and 3, as well as Super Mario World. It’s pretty cool to see how those games might’ve played out as multiplayer romps – particularly Super Mario Bros. 2, which had decidedly differentiated characters.
