At the end of last week, videogamer.com say down with Tom Chilton, also known as Kalgan, the director for the World of Warcraft series. In a two-part interview, Chilton talked a bit about what we should expect from the upcoming 3.2 content patch for the game, but more interestingly discussed a little bit about the game’s next expansion. While there isn’t much concrete info to speak off, there are some interesting tidbits that any fan of the game would want to know.

First off, Chilton said that the chances of introducing another another hero class in the next expansion was unlikely to happen. For one thing, the amount of design overhead involved in making a new class is substantial, when compared to say, making new races – plus there are major ongoing balance concerns. He also expressed concern that introducing too many classes to the game could risk homogenizing things too much, or having to spread things too thin to keep the classes unique.

As far as the setting for the new game goes, Chilton noted that Azeroth still has a lot of life in it, and they don’t need to go and visit any far off worlds just yet. This is yet another piece of info supporting the idea that the next expansion will involve the Great Sea, The Maelstrom, and the surrounding islands. Finally, in terms of new races Chilton didn’t mention anything specific, but said that for future races they will “seed” them around in the world and make them known to players, so there won’t be any repeats of the whole “mysterious creatures from space” criticisms that they got for the Draenei.
